Upgrading from OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)
OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) is no longer available for purchase from the MacApp Store. If you have OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), and your computermeets the systemrequirements for OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), you can upgrade directlyto that version instead; see ARCHIVED: Install or upgrade OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)

To reinstall or recover Mavericks, you must have an active Internetconnection. If you are on campus at Indiana University,UITS recommends the wired Ethernet network instead ofwireless. However, if IU Secure is your only option, seeConnect to an IU wireless network in macOS if booted from your Recovery HD
Reinstall while keeping files,applications, and settings
- Restart your computer, and immediately hold down
command-r
until the gray Apple logo appears. - If prompted, select your main language and then click the arrow.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue. Follow the instructions on the screen, and then choose your hard disk. Click Install, and enter your Apple ID information if prompted.
- When the installation is complete, select App Store.. from the Apple menu, and install any available updates.
Reinstall while erasing everything on yourcomputer

- Click Disk Utility, and then Continue.
- In Disk Utility, click your hard disk in the left column, and thenclick the Erase tab. Next to 'Format:', make sure Mac OSExtended (Journaled) is selected, and then give your disk a namenext to 'Name:'. If you would like to securely erase your data, clickSecurity Options.., adjust the slider accordingly, andclick OK. When you're ready, click Erase..,and then Erase again to erase your disk. Once it'scompleted, quit Disk Utility.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue. Followthe instructions on the screen, and then choose your hard disk. ClickInstall and enter your Apple ID information if prompted. Oncethe installation is complete, you'll be asked to enter basicinformation, and have the option to transfer data from another computeror backup.
- Select Software Update.. from the Apple menu, and installany available updates.
